Hamilton Masakadza joins Zimbabwe Cricket

Hamilton Masakadza has been appointed Zimbabwe Cricket’s Director of Cricket. This is a newly created role by the national board aimed at transforming the game in the country both on and off the field.

Masakadza has a long list

He will officially begin his tenure from November 1. In their last meeting in August, Zimbabwe Cricket took the decision where the board passed a resolution to restructure the management.

Masakadza will define policy, strategy, and programmes of “best practice” for the betterment of Zimbabwe cricket. He’ll also be responsible for the recruitment, management and interaction of senior cricket technical staff. He will also ensure that the coaches and captains are “providing effective leadership” to the national teams.

Masakadza’s immediate work would be to bring back Zimbabwe on track. Their recent results include a T20I loss to 22nd-ranked Singapore in a tri-series and finishing at the bottom of the points table in another tri-series, in Dhaka, which included Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Zimbabwe played those games when they were suspended by the ICC.

Now since they are a Full Member now and not participating in men’s T20 World Cup qualifier, Zimbabwe’s focus is on the ODI Super League. This league will determine qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

Chairman speaks

The Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani opined, “This is a key appointment that clearly indicates our desire to strengthen our cricket across all levels while also improving the game administratively. We are therefore excited about Hamilton taking up the role, which will see him bringing a fresh perspective to the administration of cricket and helping us to shape the future of our game.”

Mukuhlani further added that he believes in Masakadza’s incredible passion for Zimbabwe cricket and the latter’s knowledge will surely transform the country’s game. “I have no doubt that his incredible passion for Zimbabwe cricket, massive knowledge of our game and the wealth of experience that he gained from playing at the highest level will help transform ZC and see him becoming a respected leader in the sport.”
