Glenn Maxwell Steps Down as Melbourne Stars Captain After BBL Disappointment

Glenn Maxwell has announced his decision to step down as the captain of the Melbourne Stars following the club’s failure to qualify for the Big Bash League (BBL) finals. The Stars’ hopes of making the finals were dashed after they lost to the Melbourne Renegades, coupled with the Adelaide Strikers’ victory over the Sydney Thunder.

Maxwell, who is 35 years old and has two years left on his current contract, made the announcement to his teammates after the Stars’ final game of the season against the Hobart Hurricanes. Despite his leadership, the Stars have never won the BBL, finishing as runners-up three times, including consecutive runner-up finishes in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

In the recently concluded BBL season, Maxwell contributed with both bat and ball, scoring 243 runs at an average of 34.71 and a strike rate of 173.57. However, he did not manage to score a big individual innings, with his highest score being an unbeaten 35. He also picked up seven wickets during the season.

Reflecting on the Stars’ performance, Maxwell expressed frustration at not being able to capitalize on their potential. He mentioned that injuries and other factors had hindered the team’s progress over the past few years, making it difficult for them to secure a spot in the finals.

Peter Moores, the former England coach who joined the Stars as a coach this season, praised Maxwell for his commitment and leadership. Moores highlighted Maxwell’s enthusiasm and drive, especially considering his recent success in the World Cup for Australia.

While Maxwell has stepped down from his captaincy role, the Stars are reportedly keen to re-sign Marcus Stoinis, who is currently out of contract with the club.

Maxwell’s decision to relinquish the captaincy marks a significant moment for the Melbourne Stars, and the team will now look to regroup and strategize for future seasons under new leadership.
