Faf du Plessis Reflects on RCB’s Shortcomings in Narrow Loss to CSK in IPL 2024 Opener

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis conceded his team fell short against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their opening match of the IPL 2024 season. Despite a late-innings fightback courtesy of Dinesh Karthik and Anuj Rawat, RCB’s total of 173/6 proved inadequate as CSK chased it down with seven balls to spare.

Early Wickets Hurt RCB’s Momentum

Du Plessis, during the post-match presentation, acknowledged the impact of losing early wickets. “Always when you play, you get a bit of a dip after the six overs,” he said.

“Chennai are a very good team in the middle overs, they squeeze you with their spinners. Maybe we were about 15-20 runs short, the pitch wasn’t as bad as we played in the first 10 overs.”

Karthik and Rawat Provide Lifeline

RCB’s innings took a sharp turn for the worse after a promising start from du Plessis himself. However, a flurry of wickets left them reeling at 78/5 in the 12th over. The onus then fell on the experienced Dinesh Karthik and youngster Anuj Rawat to revive the innings. Their crucial 95-run partnership off just 50 balls brought RCB back into the contest, propelling them to a more respectable total.

The RCB skipper lauded the contributions of both Karthik and Rawat. “Really good for Dinesh to set up his season, especially for someone who hasn’t played a lot of cricket,” he said. “Anuj has shown some great promise for us, he showed great composure for a young guy and great power through the backend.”

CSK Outfox RCB Bowlers

Despite RCB’s late surge, CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and debutant Rachin Ravindra got off to a flying start.  Ravindra, in particular, impressed with a quickfire 37 off just 15 deliveries. While RCB bowlers managed to pick up wickets in the middle overs with a short-ball strategy, CSK batsmen adapted effectively. Shivam Dube, initially troubled by the short deliveries, weathered the storm and played a crucial knock of 42 runs. A composed Ravindra Jadeja anchored the chase alongside Dube, guiding CSK home comfortably.

This loss serves as a wake-up call for RCB as they look to bounce back in their next encounter. The opening match highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in the batting department during the middle overs. While their bowling attack showed glimpses of brilliance, they will need to strategize against teams with strong spin bowling attacks.

The IPL 2024 season promises to be a thrilling one, with a blend of young talent and experienced players taking centre stage. Fans can expect to see more exciting contests as the tournament progresses.
