After having a great season in IPL 2024, Rajasthan Royals appeared in Qualifier 2 after defeating RCB in the eliminators. In their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals chose to field after winning the toss. Trent Boult made an early impact, dismissing Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi in quick succession. Aiden Markram also fell victim to Boult’s bowling. Rajasthan’s bowlers, especially Sandeep Sharma and Avesh Khan, maintained pressure on the opposition. Sandeep Sharma claimed the crucial wicket of Travis Head, while Avesh Khan took two wickets in consecutive deliveries. Despite Heinrich Klaasen‘s fifty, Sunrisers Hyderabad was restricted to 175 runs, with Boult and Khan both securing three wickets each.

However, Rajasthan Royals faced disappointment in Qualifier 2, ending their journey in the tournament. Despite a strong start with the ball, they struggled in the second innings. Early dismissals of Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Sanju Samson hampered their batting momentum. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel fought back with notable innings, including a 56-run effort from Jurel, Rajasthan Royals fell short, managing only 139/7 in their allotted 20 overs, resulting in a 36-run defeat. That was a huge heartbreak for the team.

Gavaskar on Sanju Samson:

In the last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson was dismissed on 10 runs in 11 balls. His wicket fell down on a very crucial point. After that, a few wickets fell down consecutively. That was a setback for the team. As a result of this, Rajasthan Royals faced a 36-run defeat to SRH and ended their IPL 2024 journey at that stage.

Following SRH’s 36-run victory in Chennai, Gavaskar criticized Samson for attempting a risky shot that led to his dismissal. The former Indian skipper said, “What’s the use of scoring 500 runs if you can’t win your team the match or title? Everyone got out while playing glamorous shots. Why has Samson not had a steady India career? It’s because his shot selection has let him down.”

After that, he added, “ If his shot selection had been good, his India career too would have been long. I hope that the opportunity he has got in the T20 World Cup, he grabs it with both hands and cements his place.”

The T20 World Cup is commencing soon. The tournament will be live from June 2. Team India announced their squad and Sanju Samson has been named in the squad. India will face Ireland on their first match on June 5.
