In a significant development, Jason Roy, the explosive English opener, has been left out of the final England squad for the highly anticipated ODI World Cup 2023. The decision to exclude Roy was conveyed by the English white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, who personally informed Roy about the unfortunate news.
Buttler, who assumed the responsibility of delivering the difficult message, shed light on the challenging task of preferring Harry Brook over Roy due to the latter’s recent injury. Roy’s omission is primarily a consequence of the back spasms he suffered, which prevented him from participating in all four of England’s ODIs against New Zealand.

Expressing the difficulty of the decision, Buttler stated, “I don’t think any time is easy. It’s part of the job as captain that is not enjoyable, whether they’re great friends or not, it’s not a nice job to do. He’s a great mate of mine, so it was a really tough call to make.”
This isn’t the first time Roy has faced such disappointment, as he was also excluded from England’s T20 World Cup squad previously. Despite the challenges of delivering such news to a close friend, Buttler emphasized that it’s his responsibility as captain.
Roy’s exclusion means he will serve as the top-order reserve in case of injuries during the World Cup, but he will not travel with the primary squad to India. In his place, Harry Brook, known for his versatility in batting positions (covering Nos. 1 to 6), has been selected.
Speaking about the selection process, Buttler acknowledged the competitiveness and depth of England’s player pool, stating, “But good players miss out, it’s the very brutal nature of the sport. There are plenty of people outside the 15 who will have felt that they were in with a really good chance of a spot. It’s a bad headache to have but a good problem as a selection committee when you have a deep pool of players to choose from.”
As England prepares for the ODI World Cup 2023, the exclusion of Jason Roy and the inclusion of Harry Brook present an interesting turn of events that will undoubtedly be closely followed by cricket enthusiasts worldwide. The tournament promises to be an exciting showcase of cricket talent, and England aims to make a strong statement on the global stage.
