Dhoni’s message kept me going in tough times: Virat Kohli

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli has revealed that it was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s message of hope that kept him going during the tough times in his career. Speaking at the Eat Sure RCB Podcast, Kohli said that apart from his family and friends, it was only Dhoni who tried to contact him when the star batsman was struggling with form.

Dhoni’s message to Kohli read that ‘When people think that you are very strong, they seem to forget to check up on you.’ Kohli also mentioned during the podcast that Dhoni checked up on him twice during the form slump and asked him when he would be making a comeback. Kohli said that it gave him perspective, which in turn helped him take a step back to think more clearly, after which he scored that century against Afghanistan at the Asia Cup last year.

Kohli and Dhoni shared the field from 2008 to 2019. In these 11 years, the two ex-captains became very close friends and sailed India home together on multiple occasions. Kohli says that MS Dhoni has been kind of an unofficial mentor to him all these years and helped him rise whenever he felt low.

When asked about his experience as a captain of the Indian team, Kohli went emotional and said that several experts and cricket pundits think of him as the worst captain India has ever had because he could not win India a single ICC trophy. During Kohli’s captaincy, India made it into the semi-finals and finals of several ICC tournaments, but could not win one because of which he was often heavily criticized. However, the former skipper thinks that there has been a cultural transformation in the team and we will soon see a trophy coming home.
