Dhawan Praises Shashank and Ashutosh for Valiant Chase Despite Punjab Kings’ Defeat

The IPL 2024 encounter between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was a nail-biter, with SRH emerging victorious by a mere 2 runs. While Punjab Kings ultimately fell short, their valiant chase was spearheaded by a crucial partnership between Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, earning praise from their skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Secure Narrow Win

Chasing a target of 183 runs, Punjab Kings found themselves in a precarious position at 91/5 after 13.1 overs. However, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma entered the crease and revived their side’s hopes with a remarkable partnership reminiscent of their heroics in the previous match. Singh’s quickfire 46 off just 25 deliveries and Sharma’s blistering 33 off 15 balls, filled with boundaries, kept Punjab Kings in contention until the very last delivery.

Despite the valiant efforts of Shashank and Ashutosh, Punjab Kings were unable to cross the finish line.  At the post-match presentation ceremony, skipper Shikhar Dhawan acknowledged his team’s shortcomings while highlighting the crucial contributions of the batting duo.  “I feel that Shashank and Ashutosh played a great knock,” Dhawan said.  “We restricted them to a good total, but we couldn’t capitalize in the first 6 overs. Losing 3 wickets set us back, and that’s what ultimately cost us in the end.”

Dropped Catches Compound Punjab Kings’ Woes

Dhawan also addressed the team’s fielding errors, particularly a dropped catch on the last ball which could have potentially restricted the target further.  “When the wicket wasn’t offering a lot of bounce, every individual will have to look back and change their approach,” he said.  “We dropped a catch off the last ball, we could have kept them down by 10-15 runs, but fielding let us down overall.”

Despite the defeat, Dhawan remained optimistic about the team’s future,  focusing on the silver linings. “It’s great to see Shashank and Ashutosh chipping in with such consistency,” he said.  “There was always hope that they could take us home, but we got so close and that’ll give us confidence going into the future games. We’ll have to learn from our mistakes and do better going ahead.”

While the match resulted in a heartbreaking loss for Punjab Kings, the fighting spirit displayed by Shashank and Ashutosh has certainly provided a reason for optimism.
