Delhi Capitals dealt with another injury blow

Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting has shared an update on the fitness of their explosive opener David Warner ahead of their upcoming clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2024 season.

Ponting revealed that Warner had an X-ray after their last game against the Lucknow Super Giants, which came back all clear. However, Warner has significant swelling around the knuckle on his left hand, and the team will give him a fitness test before the match against GT.

“David (Warner) did have an X-ray after the last game. That X-ray came back all clear. But, he’s got a lot of swelling around the knuckle on his left hand. We’ll give him a fitness test tomorrow morning, and keep our fingers crossed that he’s okay,” Ponting said on the eve of the match.

Warner sustained the injury during the match against LSG, where he had difficulty staying at the crease and eventually got dismissed while trying to play a scoop shot.

Warner’s availability for the match against GT is crucial for DC, especially considering their current position in the IPL 2024 points table. DC is currently at the bottom half of the table with just two wins in seven matches. Warner has been one of the key players for DC, and his absence could further hinder their chances in the tournament.

With Warner’s availability uncertain, DC could open the innings with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Prithvi Shaw. Fraser-McGurk impressed with a fifty in the last game against LSG, and his partnership with Shaw could be crucial for DC’s success in the upcoming matches.

DC has been plagued by injuries this season, with players like Mitchell Marsh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mukesh Kumar missing games due to various injuries. Warner’s fitness will be closely monitored, and his presence in the playing XI could provide a significant boost to DC’s campaign in the IPL 2024 season.
