Cricket Legend Mike Procter Passes Away at 77: Tributes Pour In for Feared All-rounder and Respected Match Referee

The cricketing world is mourning the loss of legendary South African all-rounder Mike Procter, who passed away on February 17th at the age of 77. Tributes have poured in from across the globe, honouring his exceptional career as both a player and a match referee.

A Feared Opponent and Admired Cricketer:

ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice described Procter as “one of the most admired cricketers of his time and one of the most feared opponents.”

“It’s sad to hear of Mike’s death. He was one of the most admired cricketers of his time and one of the most feared opponents. He was a quick bowler and an attacking batter who excelled against all opposition. Mike was one of the biggest names in a fine South Africa side that included the likes of Barry Richards and Graeme Pollock. He also officiated as an ICC Match Referee in several important series. The world of cricket will be poorer for his death,” Allardice said.

He excelled with both bat and ball, scoring over 22,000 runs and claiming over 1,700 wickets in his first-class career. Having played against Australia in all his seven Test matches, he displayed his talent on the international stage as well.

Procter’s legacy extends beyond statistics. He served as a highly respected match referee for the ICC, officiating in 47 Test matches, 162 ODIs, and 15 T20Is. His experience and fair-mindedness earned him deep respect from players and officials alike.

Tributes from the Cricket Fraternity:

Following the news of his passing, condolences and tributes poured in from the cricket fraternity. Former South African teammate Barry Richards called him “a great mate and a phenomenal cricketer,” while current South African Test captain Dean Elgar praised his “outstanding contribution to the game.”

Procter’s passing leaves a void in the cricketing world. He was not only a skilled player and a fair referee, but also a mentor and an inspiration to many. His impact on the game will be felt for years to come.
