West Indies selectors did not opt for Chris Gayle in the Test series against India. In all likelihood, Gayle will appear for his last international match next Wednesday in the third ODI against India. Good news is that the southpaw is on the verge of making a new record to his name surpassing the Windies legend Brian Lara.
Last Hurrah of Gayle
Gayle could only manage to score four runs in the first ODI against India which was eventually rained out. But he played one of the slowest limited-over innings of his career. The remaining two matches will see Gayle trying to make the most as he will be probably playing his last international matches. He has the golden opportunity to make his farewell memorable and get over the heartbreak of not being chosen for Test series.
New records waiting
Gayle is on the threshold of etching his name in the history book of West Indies cricket. He is just seven runs away from becoming the highest run-getter for West Indies in ODIs. In the process, Gayle will be able to go past Windies legend Brian Lara. Lara has 10348 runs in 295 ODIs and Gayle currently has 10342 runs from the same number of ODIs. If Gayle can accumulate seven runs in two matches he will be able to change the cricket history books. Apart from Lara and Gayle, other three top scorers in the 50-over format for Windies cricket are, Shivnarine Chanderpaul (12408 runs), Desmond Haynes (8648 runs), and Sir Vivian Richards (6721 runs).
The icing of the cake would be if Gayle manages to score a century in this series and ends up with 107 runs, he will also become the leading run-scorer for the Windies against India in ODIs. He is currently at the fifth place with Desmond Haynes leading the charts with 1357 runs.
Let’s just pray rain doesn’t play the spoilsport!
