Blundell and Foulkes Bolster New Zealand Squad as Injuries Strike Allen and Milne

New Zealand‘s T20 tour of Pakistan faces a last-minute reshuffle with injuries to key players Finn Allen and Adam Milne. The Blackcaps have responded swiftly, calling up wicket-keeper/batter Tom Blundell and all-rounder Zak Foulkes as replacements.

Both Allen and Milne sustained setbacks during training ahead of the team’s departure. Allen suffered a back injury, while Milne rolled his ankle. The extent of these injuries and their potential return timelines remain unclear.

Blundell’s Experience Bolsters the Squad

Tom Blundell’s inclusion brings a wealth of experience to the New Zealand camp.  A proven performer, Blundell offers versatility as both a top-order batsman and a capable wicket-keeper.  Coach Gary Stead highlighted Blundell’s leadership qualities as an additional benefit.

“Tom is a highly experienced player and along with his wicket-keeping and batting skillsets is a leader in any group he is a part of,” Stead remarked.  Furthermore, Blundell brings recent experience in Pakistani conditions, having participated in both tours to the country in 2023.

Foulkes Earns Maiden Call-up

Zak Foulkes receives his first call-up to the national T20 squad.  The all-rounder impressed with his performances for Canterbury this season, finishing as their leading wicket-taker across all three formats.

Stead acknowledged Foulkes’ bowling prowess, particularly in T20 cricket for the Kings franchise.  He further hinted at Foulkes’ potential with the bat, stating, “We also know he has skills with the bat and it will be an excellent opportunity for him to be part of the group.”

While injuries to Allen and Milne are undoubtedly a setback, they create valuable opportunities for the incoming players.  Blundell’s experience provides stability and leadership, while Foulkes gets a chance to showcase his skills at the international level.  The New Zealand team is currently en route to Pakistan, where they will play a five-match T20I series, with the first three matches in Rawalpindi and the final two in Lahore.
