On March 7, 1987, Sunil Gavaskar etched his name in cricketing history by becoming the first-ever batsman to surpass the milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Achieving this feat in his 124th Test match, Gavaskar made his mark during a Test encounter against Pakistan in Ahmedabad. His innings of 63 runs in the first innings of the match propelled him past this monumental milestone, solidifying his status as one of the game’s greatest batsmen of all time.
Sunil Gavaskar’s historic achievement coincided with his penultimate Test match, as he retired after the subsequent game against Pakistan in Bengaluru. Celebrating the 37th anniversary of this milestone, the BCCI honored Gavaskar, now renowned for his commentary, with a special cake.

During the lunch break on Day 1 of the ongoing fifth Test between India and England, Sunil Gavaskar was spotted cutting the celebratory cake in the commentary box. The special moment marked the commemoration of his legendary achievement of surpassing 10,000 runs in Test cricket, evoking nostalgia and admiration for his monumental contribution to the sport. Gavaskar’s presence and recognition added a touch of historic significance to the match proceedings.
Sunil Gavaskar said, “This is terrific. I want to thank the BCCI for remembering this day. This is a memorable day for me, getting to the 10,000-run mark on the 7th of March. Also apparently, when I came into the commentary box today, Mohan Das Memon told me that this was also the day that I got my first half-century in Test cricket. So, terrific from the BCCI to remember this.”
He added, “Also on a day that [Ravichandran] Ashwin plays his 100th Test. It’s a special day for Indian cricket, not just for me or Ashwin. I just hope that we end this Test match with another win.”
Sunil Gavaskar’s Cricketing Career:
Sunil Gavaskar commenced his illustrious Test career during India’s 1971 tour of the West Indies. In his debut series, he set a remarkable milestone, accumulating 774 runs, a record that remains unmatched by any Indian batsman in a Test series to date.
Throughout 125 Test matches, Gavaskar amassed 10,122 runs, comprising 45 half-centuries and 34 centuries. At the time of his retirement, he held the distinction of being the sole batsman to reach the five-digit mark in Test runs and held the record for the most Test centuries. However, this record was later surpassed by another iconic Mumbaikar, Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved his 35th Test hundred against Sri Lanka in Delhi nearly 19 years after Gavaskar’s retirement.
