The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has accepted the request of Indian skipper Virat Kohli to allow the wives and girlfriends (WAGs) on overseas tours. As per the reports in TOI, the Supreme Court appointed – Committee of Administrators (CoA) made the decision to allow the WAGs to accompany their partners for a longer time.
Virat Kohli had requested that the Indian cricketers should be allowed to have their WAGs on the overseas assignments. As per the latest reports, the partners of the cricketers will be allowed to be with them after the first 10 days of the tours and then they can stay until the completion of the tours.
WAGs provide support to the cricketers
The decision to allow the WAGs makes a lot of sense. The cricketers have a pretty busy schedule and they stay away from their loved ones for a long time. On the overseas tours, it gets even more difficult as there is always a pressure to perform on the field in alien conditions. Having the family by their side, there will be a mental support for the players.
The decision was made in favor of the players as CoA reckons that the presence of WAGs will create a positive environment that will work as a support system for the players. The next overseas assignment for India will be the tour to Australia where the team will feature in series of all 3 formats lasting over 2 months.
Previously, BCCI had a rule that the WAGs will be allowed to be with their partners on the overseas tours for a period of 14 days only. Before that, the Board had a no-WAGs rule for the overseas tours.
The WAGs of the current crop of the players are deeply involved in the game. The likes of Anushka Sharma (wife of Virat Kohli), Ayesha Dhawan (wife of Shikhar Dhawan), Ritika Sajdeh (wife of Rohit Sharma) quite often are seen in the stands during the home games as well as during IPL. It’s only going to make it better for the players to have their companies on the stressful overseas tours as well.
