Babar Azam played another captain’s knock in the T20 semi-final against Australia today and made another new record. Pakistan scored 176 runs while batting first and in reply, Australia are currently having a tough time in the middle.
On Thursday Babar Azam scored 39 off 34 and gave Pakistan a good start with Mohammad Rizwan. On his way, Babar Azam became the highest run-getter in maiden T20 World Cup appearance. Interestingly, he surpassed Pakistan’s batting coach former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden. The veteran Aussie cricketer scored 265 runs in 2007, the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup. The Pakistan skipper has scored 303 runs in the tournament so far in six innings at an average of 60.60 and a strike rate of 126.25. Now he has the third-highest individual score in a T20 World Cup tournament, standing just behind Virat Kohli‘s 319 runs in 2014 edition and Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 317 in 2009.
Babar Azam also completed the milestone of 2500 runs in T20I cricket. He beat Virat Kohli to achieve the feat as he took less number of innings to do that. His 2500 T20I runs came in 62 innings while Kohli’s came in 68 innings. However, he could not contribute with a big total today when Australia asked Pakistan to bat first. The captain fell while aiming for a six against Adam Zampa.
Pakistan are currently aiming to reach the T20 World Cup final for the third time after 2007 and 2009. They would also not like to have same result as the 2010 T20 World Cup semi-final that Australia had won with just one ball remaining.
