Ashwin Defends Jaiswal: “Focus on the Challenge, Not Potential Failure”

Yashasvi Jaiswal, India‘s rising batting talent, has earned a spot in the upcoming Test series against Australia. However, some experts have questioned his ability to perform in challenging overseas conditions. Veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has come out in strong defence of Jaiswal, urging a shift in focus from potential failures to embracing the opportunity to learn and grow.

“Experts Looking for Players to Fail” – Ashwin Finds the Narrative “Ridiculously Funny”

In a recent appearance on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Ashwin addressed the concerns surrounding Jaiswal’s selection for the Australia tour. “This is one part of the narrative that I genuinely laugh at,” he stated.

He expressed his amusement at the tendency for some experts to focus on potential struggles in foreign conditions, particularly in India.  “In India especially, you have lots of experts saying about someone who has sort of burst onto the scene, ‘Hey, but hang on, let’s wait and see how he performs in Australia, in South Africa, in England,'” Ashwin said.

Ashwin went on to suggest that such negativity can be counterproductive. “I find it ridiculously funny, because unless and until you want somebody to fail, you wouldn’t say something like that,” he added. He argued that framing the discussion around potential failure detracts from the true beauty of international cricket, which lies in the challenge of conquering different conditions and proving oneself on the world stage.

Australia Tour: A Valuable Learning Experience for Jaiswal

Ashwin believes the tour of Australia presents a golden opportunity for Jaiswal’s development. “It’s the experience, right? And life is all about experiencing new things,” he said. He emphasized that facing tough conditions is an integral part of growth in international cricket. “It is going to be challenging and that’s the whole point of travelling somewhere and getting on top of it,” Ashwin explained.

The focus, according to Ashwin, should be on Jaiswal’s hunger to succeed and overcome obstacles. “Because at the end of the day, the attitude of a cricketer is to conquer everything,” he asserted. He highlighted Jaiswal’s natural talent and past success, suggesting that the youngster has a knack for turning challenges into triumphs. “Somebody like Yashasvi is a natural-gifted ball-striker,” Ashwin said. “He is somebody who, whatever he has touched, has turned into gold.”

Room for Failure and Growth

While acknowledging Jaiswal’s potential, Ashwin also recognizes the possibility of setbacks. “But I am sure, down the line, he is going to get the opportunity to fail and also see what it takes to succeed,” Ashwin concluded. He suggests that experiencing both success and failure is crucial for a cricketer’s journey, shaping their resilience and determination.

Ashwin’s defence of Jaiswal highlights the importance of fostering a culture of encouragement and support for young players.  By focusing on the opportunity for growth and experience, rather than dwelling on potential failures, the cricketing community can better nurture the development of future stars like Jaiswal.

This shift in perspective can inspire not only Jaiswal but also other aspiring players to embrace challenges with a positive mindset, paving the way for a stronger and more successful Indian cricket team in the years to come.
