Aakash Chopra questions the thinking of PBKS management

Former Indian cricketer and renowned commentator, Aakash Chopra, has criticized the Punjab Kings‘ treatment of Shashank Singh in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. Chopra expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s decision not to send Singh up the batting order in their recent match against the Mumbai Indians, a game they ultimately lost.

In a YouTube video on his channel, Chopra questioned the team management’s lack of faith in young players like Singh. He said, “When your team is 14/4, it seems like the match can’t be won because you are too far behind, and your four main players’, whom you consider your main players, innings’ have ended. Shashank comes in such a situation and Jitesh (Sharma) was there with him.”

Chopra emphasized Singh’s experience in red-ball cricket, stating that he is not just a finisher but also a proper batter. He criticized the team’s decision to not promote Singh up the order, despite his consistent performances in the tournament. Singh has been Punjab Kings’ highest scorer in the IPL 2024 season, with 187 runs from seven matches, including one fifty.

Aakash Chopra questioned PBKS Strategy

Chopra questioned the logic behind keeping Singh as a finisher, especially when he is batting well and has shown the temperament to handle pressure situations. He said, “I would want to say one thing about Shashank. The way he is batting, how did you decide that he is your finisher only, that even though he is batting well, you won’t send him up the order? What is the point? Someone who is batting well and has the temperament is not a finisher only. He plays red-ball cricket and is an experienced player.”

He urged the team management to rethink their strategy and give Singh the opportunity to bat higher up the order, where he can make a greater impact on the game.

Singh’s performances have been a bright spot for Punjab Kings this season, and Chopra’s criticism highlights the need for teams to trust their young talent and give them the opportunity to succeed in crucial roles.
