Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has criticized the Indian team’s decision to complain about Mohammad Nabi taking extra runs after the ball hit his body in the third T20I against Afghanistan. Nabi managed to secure two additional runs through overthrows off the last ball of the first Super Over in the match, which ended in a tie.
Chopra expressed his views in a video on his YouTube channel, stating that India was wrong to question Nabi’s actions. He explained, “A bye was taken off the last ball. Sanju Samson threw the ball, it hit Nabi’s leg and they ran two extra runs. One was available and India gave one because they were complaining about the spirit of the game. India were wrong in complaining. You could have restricted them to two runs and you conceded a third just like that.”
To illustrate his point, Chopra used the example of a hypothetical World Cup final scenario where the extra run could decide the match. He argued that in such a high-stakes situation, any team would take the extra run, regardless of ethical considerations.
“My question is, assuming had it been the last ball of a World Cup final and the extra run you were getting after the ball hit the pads was deciding the match, would anyone not run there? Would anyone be ready to lose the World Cup by not taking that run because it is ethically incorrect? Everyone would have run,” Chopra said.
In the first Super Over, Afghanistan scored 13 runs off the first five balls, with three runs coming off the final delivery due to the overthrows incident involving Nabi. Chopra noted that Rohit Sharma‘s powerful hitting kept India in contention during their chase, as Yashasvi Jaiswal was struggling to find form.
However, despite Rohit’s efforts, India fell short in the first Super Over, leading to another tie and a second Super Over. Chopra praised Gulbadin Naib for his crucial innings that helped Afghanistan tie the main game and also commended Washington Sundar for his impressive bowling performance.
The incident has sparked a debate, with a poll on Sportskeeda asking whether Mohammad Nabi was right in taking the extra runs, reflecting the ongoing discussion surrounding the match.
