Yuvraj Singh Criticizes Shreyas Iyer’s Approach in World Cup Opener

In a candid critique of India’s batting performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 opener, legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has expressed his frustration over Shreyas Iyer’s duck, highlighting the importance of a dependable number four batsman in the team.

Yuvraj Singh’s Twitter Post on Shreyas Iyer

Taking to the social media platform ‘X,’ Yuvraj Singh posted his thoughts on Iyer’s performance, emphasizing the role of a number four batsman in absorbing pressure and helping the team rebuild their innings. Yuvraj also questioned the decision to not have KL Rahul, who recently scored a century against Pakistan, batting at number four.

“No 4 batsman has to absorb the pressure!! Need better thinking from @ShreyasIyer15 when the team is trying to rebuild their innings! Still don’t understand why @klrahul is not batting at no 4! After scoring a 100 against Pakistan! Dropping @imVkohli might cost Australia big time, don’t drop the king because he can take the game away. Game on!!” Yuvraj’s tweet read.

Shreyas Iyer’s Loose Dismissal

Iyer’s dismissal occurred in the second over of the match when he played a loose shot to a wide length delivery by Josh Hazlewood, handing a simple catch to David Warner at covers. This early setback left India reeling at 2 for 3 after just 2 overs, putting immense pressure on the middle order.

Iyer’s entry to the crease followed the quick departures of opening batsmen Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma. Kishan’s dismissal came in the very first over, as he edged a full-length delivery from Mitchell Starc to the slip cordon, where Cameron Green made a comfortable catch.

Rohit Sharma’s early exit without contributing to the scoreboard added to India’s woes. With both openers falling without scoring, it marked only the second instance in World Cup history where both Indian openers were dismissed for ducks in a match, the first occurrence dating back to the 1983 Cricket World Cup against Zimbabwe.

As India looks to recover from the challenging start in the World Cup, Yuvraj Singh’s comments serve as a reminder of the significance of stability and resilience in the middle order, emphasizing the need for improved performance in the upcoming matches.
