In the IPL 2024 Qualifier 2, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured their place in the final by defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Abhishek Sharma, typically known for his batting, played a crucial role with the ball, inspired by words from former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.
Despite having bowled only three overs in the tournament before this match, Abhishek was called upon to deliver his full quota of four overs. He responded by taking 2 wickets for 24 runs, supporting fellow left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed, who took 3 for 23. Their combined efforts restricted RR to 139/7 in their chase of SRH’s 175/9, ensuring a 36-run victory for SRH.
Abhishek’s performance was fueled by mentorship from Yuvraj Singh. “Yuvi paaji always told me I could be a better bowler than him,” Abhishek said. This encouragement stayed with him, helping him excel when given the opportunity.
Known for his batting prowess, Abhishek had scored 470 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate over 200, including the season-highest 41 sixes. In the Qualifier 2, he added only 12 runs but made a significant impact with his bowling, taking crucial wickets of Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer.
Abhishek’s father, Raj Kumar, a former left-arm spinner, has also been instrumental in his development. “My dad has been working hard on my bowling,” Abhishek said. “From junior cricket, I’ve been bowling a lot and taking wickets.”
With this victory, SRH advanced to the final, where they will face Kolkata Knight Riders, aiming for their second IPL title.
