WPL 2023 Purple Cap: MI bowler Saika Ishaque keeps rising her stocks

Of the 87 players taking part in the WPL 2023’s debut season, 63 of them—including the all-rounders—are bowlers. Each side has a group of bowlers capable of dismantling the batting order of the opposition.

Top candidates for the Purple Cap in the WPL 2023 include Renuka Singh Thakur, Deepti Sharma, Anjali Sarvani, Megan Schutt, Ellyse Perry, Jess Jonassen, Shabnim Ismail, and Marizanne Kapp. But Saika Ishaque has been a surprise package in the WPL 2023.

Saika Ishaque, who now holds the purple cap, increased her lead atop the WPL Purple Cap rankings after taking important wickets of DC’s big three Meg Lanning, Shafali Verma, and Jemimah Rodrigues. She was named the Player of the Match with final numbers of 3-13 from her three overs.

Hayley Matthews is competing in the race for the Purple Cap in addition to her outstanding performance in the race for the Orange Cap. She took three wickets for the second game in a row, moving her into second place in the Purple Cap standings, just one wicket behind Saika Ishaque, who had six.

Yastika Bhatia was taken out by Tara Norris, who now holds third place with six wickets. After her three-wicket haul, Issy Wong moved up to the fifth place and brought her total number of wickets to four.

The Indian Premier League’s Purple Cap honors the player who has taken the most wickets in a single season (IPL). Since the start of the IPL in 2008, this award has been given out continuously, and elite bowlers fight against one another for the coveted trophy.

The Purple Cap, awarded in the first Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023), will go to the player with the most wickets over the 22-match competition.

The Purple Cap winner of the WPL 2023 has no such formal sponsor. It took the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) 15 seasons to find a sponsor for the Purple Cap in the men’s IPL; Saudi Aramco signed on as the league’s first Purple and Orange Cap sponsor in 2022.
