West Indies announce strong squad to face Nepal

West Indies A have announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming tour of Nepal, featuring a lineup filled with T20 specialists. Led by Roston Chase, the squad includes players like Fabian Allen, Johnson Charles, Mark Deyal, Andre Fletcher, Obed McCoy, and Hayden Walsh. Alick Athanaze will serve as the vice-captain.

This tour to Nepal holds significance for the West Indies as they continue their preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. According to lead selector Desmond Haynes, the tour provides an opportunity for players who are not part of the IPL to play competitive T20 cricket and also exposes emerging prospects to international cricket.

Roston Chase, who was initially considered a Test specialist, has made significant strides in T20 cricket since his debut in 2021. His performance in West Indies’ last T20I against Australia, where he scored a quick 37 and picked up 2 wickets, showcased his capabilities in the format.

Coach Daren Sammy expressed that the tour to Nepal comes at an opportune time, allowing them to refine their World Cup squad and define roles more clearly. With nine West Indian players currently participating in the IPL, the tour will also test the depth of their T20 team.

Haynes added, “Chase has exhibited over the past few years an impressive work ethic and proven leadership qualities.” He continued, “No doubt since Chase made his T20I debut in October 2021, for West Indies against Bangladesh, he has continued to make considerable strides.”

West Indies white-ball coach Daren Sammy said, “From a coaching perspective, the Nepal tour couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. It offers us a chance to refine our World Cup squad, defining roles and personnel more clearly.” Sammy also mentioned, “Additionally, with nine players in the IPL, we can truly gauge and push the limits of our T20 team’s depth.”

Floyd Reifer, the coach of the West Indies A squad, expressed, “It presents an invaluable opportunity to get our players who are not in the IPL back on the park playing competitive T20 cricket, as well as provides the chance for us to expose a few emerging prospects.”

The West Indies A squad will be coached by Floyd Reifer, with Rayon Griffith as his assistant. The tour will consist of five T20 matches, scheduled to be held at Kirtipur’s Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground on April 27, April 28, May 1, May 2, and May 4.
