Watch: Amit Mishra given out obstructing the field against SRH in the Eliminator

Obstructing the field is a rare mode of dismissal in the game of cricket. It occurs when a batsman deliberately stops the opposition from getting him out. In the ongoing IPL, Amit Mishra was the latest to be given out obstructing the field.

Amit Mishra was the latest to be given out obstructing the field.

In the Eliminator game between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Visakhapatnam, the last over was in progress. DC was chasing 162 and needed 2 runs from 3 balls with 3 wickets in hand. Amit Mishra was facing the bowler Khaleel Ahmed.

The pacer delivered a fuller one outside off. Mishra missed that ball and it went to the wicketkeeper, Wriddhiman Saha. The two batsmen took off to collect a bye run. Saha attempted to run Keemo Paul out who was charging towards the striker’s end. But he missed the stumps by a whisker.

However, the bowler was alert and collected the ball as he realized that Mishra, who was running towards the non-striker’s end, was far away from the crease. Khaleel took a shy at the stumps but Mishra changed the direction and came in between the throw and the stumps.

The ball hit Mishra’s arm and got deflected away. The fielding team immediately appealed against the obstruction. However, the review was first taken for the caught behind. There was no connection between the bat and the ball and Mishra survived that part.

But the third umpire went on to investigate the possible obstruction by Mishra. As it turned out, he was guilty of deliberately denying Khaleel of the run-out. Hence, he was adjudged out obstructing the field. This was the first incident of a batsman being given out this way in this year’s IPL.

Two deliveries were remaining in the game and DC required 2 runs. Keemo Paul struck the next delivery for a boundary and sealed a place for his side in the second qualifier against Chennai Super Kings.
