Wahab Riaz Appointed Chief Selector of Pakistan Cricket Team for Upcoming Tour

In a significant development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former left-arm pacer Wahab Riaz as the new chief selector for the national men’s selection committee. Having recently announced his retirement from international cricket, Riaz now assumes the responsibility of shaping the team for the upcoming Test tour to Australia and the T20I series against New Zealand.

The PCB, in a brief press release, stated, “Former Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz has been appointed as the chief selector of the national men’s selection committee.” This decision comes on the heels of Riaz’s retirement and places him at the forefront of selecting the squad for the crucial Test series against Australia from December 14 to January 7 and the T20I series against New Zealand from January 12 to 21.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Wahab Riaz thanked the PCB staff and Chairman PCB Management Committee, Mr. Zaka Ashraf. In a video released by the PCB, Riaz stated, “I am honoured to assume the role of chairperson for the national men’s selection committee, and I extend my gratitude to Chairman PCB Management Committee, Mr. Zaka Ashraf, for entrusting me with this responsibility.”

Highlighting the challenges of heading a selection committee, Riaz emphasised the significance of the upcoming Australia tour, part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle, and the T20I series against New Zealand. He expressed his commitment to developing a formidable unit leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies in June next year.

Wahab Riaz stressed the importance of giving weightage to top performers in domestic cricket while announcing well-rounded squads with the necessary skillsets. He also mentioned his good rapport with the Pakistan Men’s Team Director, Mohammad Hafeez, highlighting their collaborative approach for the success of Pakistan cricket.
