Virat Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, has been fined 50% of his match fee by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Kohli’s outburst came after a controversial dismissal in RCB’s match against KKR on Sunday.
The incident occurred when Kohli, opening the batting for RCB, was given out to a delivery that appeared to be a waist-high full toss bowled by Harshit Rana of KKR. Despite Kohli’s review, the third umpire upheld the on-field decision, leading to Kohli’s dismissal for 18 runs off 7 balls. Kohli expressed his frustration and disappointment at the umpire’s decision, which led to a heated exchange between the RCB captain and the match officials.
In a statement, the IPL said, “Mr. Virat Kohli, Batter, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024.” The statement further mentioned that Kohli admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction, as per the Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct.
Kohli’s outburst and subsequent fine have added to the drama of the IPL 2024 season, where the cricketer has been in exceptional form with the bat, leading the run-scoring charts and playing a crucial role for RCB.
