The arrival of Samaweera

After Jarrad Loughman was done with his role as a captain back in November 2023, the team’s assistant coach Dulip Samaweera was promoted to the coach position for the team.

On Loughman’s role, Cricket Victoria Head of Female Cricket Sharelle McMahon had said:

“We have undertaken a comprehensive review and assessment of our women’s state program to ensure we are well-positioned to achieve success in the years to come.

“The process has provided us clarity on the direction of the program and determined that the program requires a different skillset in the Senior Coaching role.”

Victoria Women’s Team has a long history, with their first recorded match being against New South Wales back on 17 March 1891.

Why Samaweera left the job

Dulip Samaweera became the interim Coach for the team in November. After signing a contract for permanent coach position in May, which would go on for the next 2 years, Dulip Samaweera left the job in just 2 Weeks.

Samaraweera, who played seven Tests and five ODIs for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1994, resigned after being denied an appointment he wanted to make to his staff due to the state’s policies.

“During the recruitment process, Dulip had expressed a desire to make a specific coaching appointment in his support team,” Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins said.

“That appointment was unable to be facilitated due to internal policies we have in place. Following further conversations, Dulip decided he would prefer not to remain in the role.”

Andrew Christie, Melbourne Renegades’ WBBL assistant coach, will replace Samaweera in the role. Christie had been part of the interviews for the initial job and had joined Cricket Victoria in 2021 leading the female emerging player program.
