In anticipation of the T20 World Cup 2024, premier Australian batter Travis Head has stirred excitement by hinting at a potential showdown with India in the final. Speaking about the possibility, Head suggested that such a clash would be a major spectacle, especially given India’s recent losses to Australia in crucial ICC event finals.
Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India narrowly missed out on two ICC titles in 2023. They lost to Australia in both the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the ODI World Cup final. On both occasions, Head played pivotal roles, scoring centuries that secured victories for Australia.
Reflecting on these encounters, Head said, “It would be nice. It would be nice to be in the final. I think everyone in India would love that, especially considering what’s happened in the last two finals. So, I’m sure India wants some revenge at some point. There would be good theatre around it if that were the case. Let’s hope that we’re in it, and let’s hope you’re in it, and we’ll see what happens.”
In the WTC 2023 final, Head scored a commanding 163 runs in the first innings, effectively taking the game away from India. He continued his stellar form in the ODI World Cup final, scoring an unbeaten 137 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, leading Australia to victory while chasing a target of 241 runs.
Despite the tough losses, Head acknowledged the strength of the Indian team, highlighting key players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the batting lineup, and Jasprit Bumrah in the bowling department. “India is in good hands. I think you could probably name four or five teams that are going to be in the mix. Playing an attacking brand of cricket is crucial for them. With Rohit and Virat, and their exceptional bowling led by star bowler Bumrah, who has also been outstanding in the IPL, their chances are high. Their chances are probably similar to the three or four other teams that are in contention,” he added.
While Australia claimed their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021, they faced disappointment the following year, failing to progress from the league stage on home soil. As the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, both teams are eager to prove themselves and claim the coveted trophy.
