Sydney Sixers allrounder Tom Curran has been ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) due to a knee injury. The injury, sustained during a match against Melbourne Stars, has also cast doubt on his participation in the ILT20 with Desert Vipers.
Curran’s injury means he will miss the final two regular-season games for the Sixers as they aim to secure a spot in the finals. Despite his absence from the BBL finals, Curran was not expected to be available due to his commitments with the ILT20, where Vipers are set to start their campaign on January 21.
According to a statement by the Sixers, the full extent of Curran’s injury is not yet known, and he will return to the UK for further assessment. This development comes after a mixed season for Curran in the BBL, where he faced a ban for four matches due to an incident involving the fourth umpire Muhammad Qureshi.
In a game against Hobart Hurricanes, Curran showcased his talent with a notable performance, claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs. However, his season has been marred by the ban resulting from an incident where he continued to practice pre-match run-ups on the pitch despite being instructed not to do so.
Curran expressed regret over the incident, stating, “I am genuinely sorry that I chose to continue to practice my run-up in the direction of Umpire Qureshi and if he ever thought I sought to make physical contact with him.”
With Curran’s absence, the Sixers may consider bringing Hayden Kerr back into the side, depending on the team’s balance. However, they will have the services of Steven Smith for their upcoming match against Sydney Thunder. Additionally, James Vince will be unavailable for the finals as he has prior commitments with Gulf Giants in the ILT20.
Curran’s injury is a setback for both the Sixers and the Desert Vipers, and his return to action will depend on the outcome of further assessments in the UK.
