Bangladesh cricket fans are in for a wait as star opener Tamim Iqbal confirmed an indefinite break from the national team in 2024. This news comes after a lengthy meeting between Iqbal and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials on Thursday.
Indefinite Break But Eyes ODI Return
The 34-year-old cricketer, who previously announced a retirement that was later reversed, will not be featuring in any international matches this year. However, there’s a possibility of him returning for the One-Day International (ODI) format in 2025.
âTamim has informed us that he will not be playing Tests anymore because of his physical state and fitness issues. If he returns, he will return with the ODI format next year,” a BCB source revealed to The Daily Star.
This decision comes after Tamim’s absence from the ICC Cricket World Cup squad due to reported friction with teammate Shakib Al Hasan. He last played an ODI for Bangladesh in September 2023 against New Zealand and a Test match against Ireland in April 2023.
Fitness Concerns and Team Management Issues Cited
Iqbal’s decision reportedly stems from a combination of fitness concerns and reservations regarding the team setup. During the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), he hinted at a need for certain issues to be addressed before his return, sparking speculation about disagreements with team management.
While acknowledging Iqbal’s experience and achievements, BCB director Khaled Mahmud questioned the idea of imposing conditions for his return. “Since he wanted to talk with the president, it’s better we don’t talk. Why he doesn’t want to play or what has to happen for him to play, is better if he clears it with the board and the president,” Mahmud concluded.
BCB Promises Swift Resolution
BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus acknowledged the situation and assured a swift resolution. “We have heard about everything from him and we have talked to him too. We will convey the message to the president and we feel that this issue will be settled pretty quickly,â Yunus stated.
Tamim Iqbal’s absence from the national team is a significant blow for Bangladesh cricket. With the experienced opener out, the team will need to find a strong replacement to fill the crucial opening slot.
