Jasprit Bumrah’s career can be divided into several phases, each marked by significant achievements and milestones that have cemented his place as one of the premier fast bowlers in world cricket.
Jasprit Bumrah’s journey to the international and IPL stage was not without its challenges. Despite his talent, his unconventional bowling action raised concerns among selectors early in his career. When asked by Anil Patel, then secretary of the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad, Bumrah appeared at the under-19 selection trials but was named as a reserve due to his bowling action. However, after the district team won the first three matches, all three reserve players were given a chance in the fourth three-day match, where Bumrah shone, taking seven wickets.
Bumrah made his T20 debut for Gujarat against Maharashtra in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and played a crucial role in his team’s victory in the final against Punjab, where he was named Man of the Match for his figures of 3/14.
His performances in domestic cricket caught the eye of John Wright, then the head coach of Mumbai Indians, who invited Bumrah to sign up for the franchise after being impressed by his bowling in a match against Mumbai. Bumrah made his first-class debut for Gujarat against Vidarbha in October 2013, where he announced his arrival with a seven-wicket haul.
Despite his early success, Bumrah faced challenges regarding his bowling action. During the 2015–16 Vijay Hazare Trophy, umpires raised concerns about his action after the first two matches. However, the issue was resolved after the team management protested against it. Bumrah continued to excel, playing a crucial role in Gujarat’s victory in the tournament, including a five-wicket haul in the final against Delhi.
During the 2013–14 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah caught the eye of John Wright, the head coach of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians (MI), who invited him to sign up for the team. Bumrah accepted the offer and has been a vital player for Mumbai Indians ever since, helping the team win the IPL title five times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. He has played 120 matches for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, taking 145 wickets at an average of 23.30 and an economy rate of 7.39, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for the team after Lasith Malinga.
Bumrah made an impact in his IPL debut match at the age of 19, finishing with figures of 3/32 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Despite Virat Kohli hitting him for three fours in his first four deliveries, Bumrah managed to dismiss him, securing his maiden IPL wicket. He played only two matches in his debut season but was retained by Mumbai Indians for the 2014 season. In the 2014 season, Bumrah played 11 matches, finishing as the team’s fifth leading wicket-taker with five wickets.
In the 2016 IPL season, Bumrah took four 3-wicket hauls and was Mumbai Indians’ second-leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets. His standout performance came against Delhi Daredevils at Visakhapatnam, where he took three wickets for just thirteen runs. In the 2017 season, Bumrah was the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians and the third-leading wicket-taker of the tournament, taking 20 wickets. He played a crucial role in the final against Rising Pune Supergiant, where he took two wickets, including the crucial wicket of MS Dhoni, helping Mumbai Indians lift the trophy.
In the 2018 IPL season, Bumrah took 17 wickets, finishing as the second leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians. His best performance came against Kings XI Punjab, where he took 3 wickets for 15 runs. In the 2019 season, despite suffering a shoulder injury in the first match, Bumrah continued to play and was instrumental in Mumbai Indians’ title-winning campaign. He finished as the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians with 19 wickets.
Bumrah’s best IPL season came in 2020, where he took 27 wickets, becoming the highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians and the second-highest wicket-taker of the season. He took two four-wicket hauls in the season. In the 2021 season, Bumrah once again led the bowling attack for Mumbai Indians, taking 21 wickets in 14 matches and finishing as the team’s leading wicket-taker.
In the 2022 season, Bumrah took 15 wickets in 14 matches, finishing as the highest wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians. He took a five-wicket haul against Kolkata Knight Riders, with figures of 5/10, the best of his IPL career. Bumrah was ruled out of the 2023 IPL season due to a back injury. His consistent performances and ability to deliver in pressure situations have made him a key player for Mumbai Indians and one of the best bowlers in the history of the IPL.
