Mumbai Indians stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav has been fined for a slow over-rate during his team’s Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. The IPL governing body imposed the fine on Yadav after Mumbai Indians failed to complete their 20 overs within the allotted time.
The IPL has strict regulations in place to ensure that matches are played within a certain timeframe, in order to maintain the pace and excitement of the tournament. During the game, Mumbai Indians were even forced by the umpires to field with just 4 fielders outside the 30-yard circle, instead of the regular 5, as a means of punishment. Yadav and his team will need to be more vigilant about their over-rates in future matches to avoid further penalties.
In an official statement released by the Indian Premier League, it was revealed that Suryakumar Yadav will have to pay a fine of Rs. 12 Lakhs for maintaining a slow over rate. “As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Suryakumar Yadav was fined Rs. 12 Lahks,” the statement read.
Nitish Rana and Hrithik Shokeen fined as well
Kolkata Knight Riders captain Nitish Rana and Mumbai Indians bowler Hrithik Shokeen have also been fined for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. Rana was fined 25% of his match fee after admitting to a Level 1 Offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, while Shokeen was fined 10% of his match fee for admitting to a Level 1 Offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. Both players were involved in a verbal spat, which led to the breach of conduct.
The IPL has a strict Code of Conduct in place to ensure that matches are played in the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. Level 1 offenses under the Code of Conduct are relatively minor breaches and can result in fines, warnings, or reprimands. The decision of the Match Referee is final and binding in such cases. The IPL takes a zero-tolerance approach to any kind of misbehavior on the field, and players are expected to uphold the highest standards of behavior at all times.
