Star Indian batter ruled out of IPL 2023 and WTC Final; to undergo surgery abroad

A major update has just come regarding Shreyas Iyer’s fitness. Shreyas Iyer, the prominent Indian batsman, has been forced to undergo surgery on his injured back. Iyer, who serves as the full-time captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, will be traveling abroad for the surgery in some time.

Will Shreyas play IPL?

The surgery will put Shreyas Iyer on 3 months of bed rest post which he would be able to resume training. Thus, as a result of this surgery, not only will Shreyas Iyer miss the entirety of the Indian Premier League, but will also miss the World Test Championship final to be held at The Oval in London from 7th June.

Shreyas Iyer has been dealing with a recurring lower-back injury that has caused him to miss several important matches. The injury first occurred in December after India’s tour of Bangladesh and resurfaced again during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last month, ultimately forcing him to withdraw from the final Test and the subsequent ODI series against Australia.

The cause of Iyer’s injury is believed to be a bulge in one of the discs in his spine, which has resulted in an impinged nerve. This has caused swelling in his lower back and shooting pain in his right calf, which has made it difficult for him to move around. To manage the pain, Iyer has been receiving injections to numb the affected area.

This injury has become a significant obstacle for Iyer, who is a promising talent in the Indian cricket team. The Indian team’s biggest concern would be to find the perfect batter in the middle order who could fill in Iyer’s shoes as he has been a constant performer for the team in the middle order.

Kolkata Knight Riders had announced Nitish Rana their interim captain ahead of the  season. However, the team is yet to name a replacement for their injured captain.
