Sri Lankan Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga Reflects on Narrow 2-Wicket Defeat to Bangladesh

Fans witnessed another thrilling morning of the T20 World Cup 2024. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh faced each other in the 15th match of the tournament. But the start was not desired for Sri Lanka. They faced a 2-wicket defeat to Bangladesh. They couldn’t execute their plans in the match. After starting the tournament with a setback, Sri Lanka skipper Wanindu Hasaranga talked about the match.

The Grand Prairie Stadium host the 15th match of the tournament where Sri Lanka and Bangladesh locked horns. While batting first, Sri Lanka’s batting order struggled. While opening the innings with Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis was dismissed on 10 runs. That was the first setback for the team. 

After that, Kamindu Mendis also walked away scoring 4 runs in 5 balls. Nissanka was close to his well-deserved half-century but unfortunately lost his wicket to Mustafizur Rahman on 47 runs. Dhananjaya de Silva scored 21 runs and Charitha Asalanka added 19 runs in 21 balls. Angelo Matthews scored 16 runs in 19 balls. With those efforts, they scored only 124/9 in the allotted 20 overs. 

While defending 124 runs, the Sri Lankan bowlers tried to give tough competition to the opponent batters. Nuwan Thusara conceded only 18 runs in 4 overs and secured 4 crucial wickets with an impressive economy rate of 4.50. Skipper Hasaranga conceded 32 runs and secured 2 wickets. But the efforts fell short and faced a defeat.

Hasaranga Reflected on the Defeat:

Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2024 journey with 2 defeats. Against Bangladesh, they faced a narrow defeat of 2 wickets. After the defeat, Sri Lankan skipper Wanindu Hasaranga opened up. He said, “We started really well in the first 10 overs but in the middle overs we batted badly. Bowling is our strength. If we had got 150-160 we could have won with our bowling attack.”

Sri Lanka’s batting lineup registered a poor display that cost the match. While talking about this, he said, “The batters let us down in both games. We still have two games and we will try to do our best. Maheesh and myself are the two main spinners and we have to attack.”
