Sri Lanka Questions Soumya Sarkar’s Overturned Dismissal in Second T20I Against Bangladesh

The second T20I between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh witnessed a controversial moment early in the innings, raising questions about the application of the DRS (Decision Review System). Sri Lanka’s assistant coach, Naveed Nawaz, expressed his disappointment with the overturned caught-behind decision of Bangladeshi batsman Soumya Sarkar, suggesting it played a pivotal role in the game’s outcome.

The Incident: A Close Call at the Wicket

The incident unfolded in the fourth over when Sri Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka introduced pacer Binura Fernando. As Soumya attempted a pull shot, the ball seemingly edged his bat and was caught by wicket-keeper Kusal Mendis. The on-field umpire promptly raised his finger, dismissing Soumya. However, the batsman opted for a review.

The third umpire, Masudur Rahman, after reviewing the footage, overturned the on-field decision. While the replays indicated a slight spike on the Snickometer, it was deemed to have occurred a fraction of a second after the ball had passed the bat. This inconclusive evidence led to the dismissal being overturned, sparking frustration within the Sri Lankan camp.

Nawaz Expresses Discontent

Commenting on the decision, Nawaz stated, “The on-field umpire had given him out and I am sure the TV umpire got to have conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field umpire’s decision. We haven’t seen the footage or anything like that, but it was clear that there was a spike, we saw it on the big screen and we might have to take it up to the match referee and see what actually happened there. The footage that we have got on our screens were not enough to say anything but I am sure the TV umpire had evidence to overturn the decision.”

Nawaz highlighted the potential impact of the overturned decision on the match, stating, “I mean it was a big issue and the first wicket and it could have given us a head start. Obviously, on a track like this, any wicket is crucial.”

While Soumya was eventually dismissed later in the innings, the controversial decision undeniably caused a stir and potentially affected the momentum of the Sri Lankan team. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in close calls and the ongoing debate surrounding the use of technology in umpiring decisions.
