After the World Cup 2023, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board faced a downtime. The whole cricket board faced a ban from the ICC. The sports minister of the country was sacked. Now, they are on a goal to create a corruption-free cricket board. The first step is already taken. Former Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya was appointed as the full-time ‘Cricket Consultant’.
A New Role for Sri Lankan Legend:
After facing a downtime, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board is looking forward to bouncing back. They are starting straight from the beginning. To add professionalism to national programs, a new step is taken by the authority. To move forward, Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya is set to contribute once again to the Sri Lankan Cricket.
He is all set to play a new role. The cricket board has appointed him as the ‘Cricket Consultant’. He will play a pivotal role in raising the standards of cricket in the country. He will be responsible for monitoring the training and coaching aspects for all teams associated with the high-performance center. Skill development strategies with the player development plan will be in focus.
Sanath Jayasuriya is an all-time cricket legend of the country. In his captaincy, Sri Lanka won their only World Cup trophy till now. Jayasuriya played 110 test matches and scored 14 centuries. In the white-ball format, he scored 28 centuries. His all-round skill can’t be explained in words. In a career span of 20 years, this left-arm orthodox bowler spinner claimed 400 wickets. In this new role, he is ready to take on the upcoming challenges.
Statement by the Board:
The Sri Lankan Cricket Board announced this news on social media. They said, “Under this role, Jayasuriya will be responsible for ensuring that SLC national programs achieve an optimum level of professionalism and that all players are coaching staff are monitored in order to deliver excellence.”
Further, they added, “Accordingly, he will oversee the training and coaching requirements of all teams aligned with the high-performance center, the implementation of individual skill development strategies in line with the ongoing player development plan, and the compliance of all player reporting aligned with the athlete management system of the SLC. He will also establish national specialist skill programs with key staff aligned to lead roles within each skill discipline, among several other tasks.”
