In the 71st match of IPL 2024, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sun Risers Hyderabad came together in a face off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad had won the toss and opted to bat first against KKR. The SRH team managed to score 159 runs in 19.6 overs.
KKR managed to win the match by scoring 164 runs, while losing only 2 wickets in the process. Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer both scored half centuries of their own, taking their team to victory.
Shreyas Iyer’s emotions after winning match
Addressing the audience at the post match ceremony, the winning team captain Shreyas Iyer mentioned the team’s emotions being positively charged.
“Elated by the performance, the responsibility was important, we stood for each other, extremely happy with the performances. The rejuvenation was important for us. When you travel so much. It’s important to stay in the present. Today was the day we had to maximise, we did it and that’s what we thrive on.” Iyer said.
Shreyas also praised the KKR bowlers on the occasion.
“ I think the way every bowler stood up to this occasion, the way they came in and took wickets, that was imperative. The attitude and approach of all bowlers was to take wickets and they did. When you have a variety in the bowling line-up, it’s mesmerizing. They have been true in terms of their work ethics, hopefully we keep performing.”
The gap between KKR’s two Iyers
Despite sharing the same culture, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer both are quite different. Both the players have delivered for the KKR team in their own way throughout the season.
Shreyas Iyer mentioned how he does not speak in Tamil, despite understanding the language. Venkatesh Iyer speaks in Tamil, while Shreyas replies to him in Hindi.
Additionally, Iyer also praised Gurbaz, who performed well on his first game of the tournament.
“It was Gurbaz’s first game and he gave an impactful start. We had to make sure we carry forward the same run rate. I don’t know tamil, but I understand. Venky speaks in tamil, I reply in hindi (talking about the communication between him and Venkatesh Iyer). We need to be in our zone in the final and make sure we give our best.” Iyer said.
Mitchell Starc became the Player Of The Match, as he took Travis Head’s wicket in the powerplay on Head’s second bowl of the evening. Stark also took Shahbaz Ahmed’s wicket on the first ball.
KKR won today’s match by 8 wickets, leaving SRH behind in the race to the trophy. It is still unknown which team will take the trophy.
