Shubman Gill expresses concern over the impact player rule

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has joined the chorus of Team India stars expressing their views on the Impact Player rule in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. Gill believes that the rule has contributed to the high-scoring nature of matches, providing an advantage for batters to maintain an aggressive approach against bowlers throughout the innings.

The Impact Player rule, aimed at enhancing tactical depth and fan engagement in IPL matches, seems to be influencing the dynamics of gameplay by providing teams with strategic flexibility and boosting scoring rates in the tournament. Gill’s comments came after Delhi Capitals scored a formidable total of 224 for 4 against Gujarat Titans, marking the 12th instance of a team scoring over 200 runs in a match this season.

During the post-match presentation, Gill remarked, “I think Impact Player has a bit of role in that. Even if you lose wickets in the powerplay or in the middle overs… you know every team has a cushion. So, they just keep going, and to be able to get to a good start, they can’t just play out in middle overs. They need to keep going and get a good score in the end.”

Gill’s opinion echoes those of other Team India players, including Axar Patel and Mukesh Kumar from Delhi Capitals, who have also spoken out against the rule. They have highlighted the challenge posed by flat pitches, which further exacerbate the situation for bowlers.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma had earlier criticized the Impact Player rule, expressing concerns that it would hinder the prospects of all-rounders. “I’m not a big fan… It’s going to hold back all-rounders. Cricket is played by 11, not 12,” Rohit had remarked during an appearance on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

With Gujarat Titans facing an inconsistent season so far, having suffered five losses in nine matches, their road to a playoff qualification has become more challenging. Gill emphasized the importance of execution for bowlers on small, batsman-friendly grounds, highlighting the need to adapt and execute plans effectively in such conditions.
