Shoaib Akhtar Critiques Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy Ahead of ICC World Cup 2023, Cites Potential for Improvement

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar recently shared his perspective on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in a video posted by Revsportz on YouTube. Akhtar, while acknowledging Sharma’s batting prowess, expressed his belief that the Indian skipper tends to exhibit signs of panic during critical moments in matches. He didn’t mince his words, stating, “Rohit Sharma is a great guy. However, he does panic at times during captaincy. I may sound a bit harsh here, but I don’t think he should have taken up India’s captaincy.”

Akhtar’s Assessment

Shoaib Akhtar went on to compare Rohit Sharma’s talent to that of former captain Virat Kohli, emphasizing that Sharma is a classical batter with exceptional skills. However, he questioned whether Sharma was ideally suited for captaincy, particularly in high-pressure situations. Akhtar’s remarks have sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts about the leadership qualities of Rohit Sharma as India prepares for the ICC World Cup 2023.

Despite his critique of Sharma’s captaincy, Shoaib Akhtar expressed optimism about India’s chances in the upcoming World Cup. He highlighted the formidable team and the advantage of playing on home soil as key factors that could lead to success. Akhtar said, “But there’s no doubt that he has the ability to win this World Cup. He has a home advantage and a good team.”

It’s worth noting that Rohit Sharma has a commendable captaincy record in international cricket. In ODIs, he has led the Men in Blue to 24 wins out of 34 matches. In T20Is, Sharma has guided India to victory in 39 out of 51 games. Additionally, under his leadership, India has won five out of nine Test matches.

The Search for an Ideal Captain

Shoaib Akhtar also touched upon the search for an ideal captain for the Indian cricket team since the retirement of MS Dhoni. He noted that while Virat Kohli displayed aggression during his captaincy tenure, Rohit Sharma’s tendency to panic raises questions about leadership suitability. Akhtar attributed the immense pressure on Indian captains to constant media scrutiny and expectations, saying, “An environment is built in which India just cannot afford to lose at any cost.”

As India gears up for the ICC World Cup 2023, they will commence their campaign with a highly anticipated clash against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, October 8. Cricket fans around the world eagerly await the action-packed tournament, where India aims to secure their third World Cup title under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.
