The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the umpiring team for the highly anticipated T20 World Cup opener between the USA and Canada, set for June 1st. This match marks a significant milestone for cricket officials, with Bangladesh’s Shahid Saikat making history and seasoned umpire Richard Illingworth lending his experience.
Saikat Makes History, Illingworth Brings Experience
Shahid Saikat, a 47-year-old Bangladeshi umpire, will become the first from his country to officiate at a Men’s T20 World Cup. This is a testament to his impressive career, having already overseen five matches in the previous edition and participating in two ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups and the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Saikat will be sharing the field with a true veteran of the game, Richard Illingworth. Illingworth is a highly respected figure in cricket umpiring, having secured the prestigious David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year a record-breaking three times, most recently in 2023. He further bolsters the team’s experience by virtue of having officiated in the high-pressure ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia last year.
Supporting Cast Ready for Action
The officiating team for the tournament opener extends beyond Saikat and Illingworth. Richie Richardson will be the match referee in Dallas, ensuring fair play throughout the contest. Sam Nogajski, one of five umpires making their senior men’s tournament debut, will be the TV umpire, responsible for reviewing on-field decisions. Langton Rusere will be the fourth umpire, providing additional support on the field.
The upcoming tournament will also see debuts from other promising umpires. Rashid Riaz will officiate in the second match between Papua New Guinea and West Indies, while Andy Pycroft, a seasoned match referee, will reach his 150th T20I during this encounter. Later that day, Jayaraman Madanagopal will make his debut when Namibia takes on Oman in Barbados.

The T20 World Cup will also see the return of many experienced umpires, including Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney, Richard Kettleborough, and Joel Wilson.
