The T20 World Cup is knocking the door. Just after a few days, the cricket fraternity is going to enjoy another thrilling edition of the tournament. Pakistan becomes the last team that has declared their squad. With not many major changes, Pakistan selected their players. But Azam Khan’s selection in the T20 World Cup squad didn’t sit well with the former Pakistani captain Shahid Afridi. And he made a big comment on that.
Afridi on Azam Khan’s Selection:
The preparation has been started for the upcoming T20 World Cup. All the teams are struggling hard. Pakistan announced their T20 World Cup squad at the very end. There are no major changes but an interesting inclusion. Azam Khan, who caught headlines multiple headlines for his fitness got a chance to represent his country in the big stage of the T20 World Cup.
Shahid Afridi, former Pakistan captain, has raised concerns about Azam Khan’s fitness for the national team. Afridi emphasized the importance of fitness, stating that he wouldn’t allow Khan to play for Pakistan until he improves his fitness. Afridi believes that maintaining a high fitness level enhances a player’s body language on the field, crucial for performing at the highest level.
He said, “Fitness is the main thing. If you are fit, your body language gives it away on the ground, be it while batting, bowling, or fielding. You can’t compromise on fitness. I would never let Azam Khan get anywhere near the team as far as fitness is concerned.”
Azam Khan’s Struggle Behind the Wickets:
This edition of the T20 World Cup is being organized by the West Indies and the USA. Teams are going to play in the Caribbean condition. Traveling as a wicketkeeper batter, Azam Khan will play a crucial role in the tournament. To be flexible behind the stumps, he needs to be fit and Afridi raised his concern in that.
He said, “In England, the ball carries behind the stumps (while keeping). But when they’ll go to the West Indies, the ball won’t carry as much there, it will keep low. I hope he doesn’t struggle, but I am worried about his keeping against spinners in West Indian conditions with this fitness, because the ball stays low there and you have to keep your body low as well.”
Before the T20 World Cup, Pakistan is facing England in a T20 series. After the first match of the series was washed out, Pakistan faced a 23-run defeat in the second game. They will try hard to end the series on a winning note. After that, they will play their first match in the T20 World Cup on June 6 against the USA. On June 9th, they will face their biggest-ever rival India in New York.
