Ruturaj Gaikwad’s Journey to CSK Captaincy: A Tale of Mentorship and Preparation

CSK’s former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had forewarned Ruturaj Gaikwad about the possibility of assuming the captaincy for the Chennai Super Kings back in 2022. Since then, Gaikwad has remained prepared for the role, despite the absence of extensive discussions between the two regarding leadership strategies for one of the IPL’s most successful teams. Dhoni’s early advice served as a guiding principle for Gaikwad, who has since embraced the responsibility and readiness associated with potentially leading the team.

CSK’s Captaincy Experiment:

While the Chennai Super Kings’ prior leadership trial with Ravindra Jadeja fell short, the team management holds hope for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s enduring captaincy prospects. Dhoni’s candid approach guided discussions with Gaikwad about the transition. The team’s faith in Gaikwad’s capacity for long-term leadership is palpable, marking a transition to a fresh era under his stewardship. Dhoni’s backing and mentoring underscore the confidence in Gaikwad’s ability to lead, setting the stage for a promising tenure at the helm of the Chennai Super Kings.

Ruturaj Gaikwad About Captaincy:

CSK’s now captain Ruturaj Gaikwad showcased exemplary leadership in the victory over Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday night. Surprisingly, he was named captain of the Chennai Super Kings just a day before the IPL opener on March 22. Gaikwad’s sudden appointment as captain reflects the team’s confidence in his leadership abilities and highlights his readiness to take on such a significant role in the team.

After yesterday’s match against KKR in post-match, CSK skipper Ruturaj said, “To be honest, not really deep conversations. I feel it was in a very chilled state. Just one conversation I would say. Just we were practicing and he came and told me all this stuff. Obviously, everyone, others on the outside, would think they are big shoes to fill, but I feel I would always be myself and I would like to continue the culture that has been going on.”

He further said, “ I remember in 2022 when he told me, ‘Probably not next year, but after that, you might get a chance to lead, so be ready for it’. So, obviously after that, I was always ready for it.”

A meticulous franchise like CSK prioritizes detailed planning, evident in head coach Stephen Fleming’s discussions on field and bowling alterations with Gaikwad last year. This proactive approach underscores the team’s commitment to strategic preparation and player development. Such interactions between the coaching staff and players exemplify CSK’s dedication to refining their game plan for optimal performance on the field.

He added, “It was nothing new to me or a surprise or a shock. I know how to control the game. I know how the game progresses, which change , and what to do when, as I was doing for the state team as well. ven last year, Fleming and I used to discuss captaincy after every game, about how I felt, what changes, bowling changes what I felt we needed to do, this or that. Every game, we had one-on-one conversations so that really helped.”

When questioned about his captaincy style, Gaikwad emphasized his commitment to continuity. He stated that he doesn’t advocate for drastic changes but rather believes in maintaining consistency. Gaikwad’s approach highlights his preference for stability and gradual progress rather than abrupt alterations in the team’s strategy.

He also said, “ Captaincy-wise, I don’t want to be a specific kind of character. Just let things flow and keep the culture of CSK going. The success that we had and the things we have been doing, I don’t want to change a single bit of it. I just want to come here, make my own decisions and just give as much freedom as possible because that’s what has been happening from when I joined CSK. Nothing really changes and I’m enjoying a lot.”
