Rohit Sharma Reflects on ICC Trophy Drought and Individual Performances

India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, recently shared his thoughts on India’s drought in ICC trophies since 2014 and the significance of individual performances in the context of team achievements. Despite India’s impressive record in ICC events over the past decade, the team has been unable to clinch a title, reaching the knockout stages nine out of ten times.

Reflecting on his tenure as captain since 2022, Rohit Sharma expressed his desire to win an ICC trophy while acknowledging the team’s success in other aspects of the game. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and focusing on upcoming events, acknowledging that the past cannot be changed.

“The last three years have been great. Except for winning the finals of ICC trophies, we have won everything. That’s one thing we’ve not been able to accomplish, but I think time will come. All we need to do is stay in a good mindset, not worry too much about the past, because you can’t change the past. What you can change is what is going to come next, so all of us are quite focused on that,” Rohit Sharma stated.

Rohit Sharma also recalled his exceptional performance in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he scored a record-breaking 648 runs, including five centuries, making him the highest run-scorer of the tournament. However, he emphasized that individual achievements hold little value if they are not accompanied by team success.

“I wanted to bring about a certain change, players going out there and playing with a lot of freedom. I wanted to take the statistical side of cricket out of this team. We are playing our hearts out. Numbers are overrated. In India, we do talk a lot about numbers and all of that. I got five hundreds in the 2019 World Cup, but we still lost. The hundreds don’t matter,” Rohit Sharma added.

Despite his personal success in the tournament, India suffered a defeat against New Zealand in the semi-final, preventing them from lifting the trophy. Rohit Sharma reiterated that individual accomplishments should always be secondary to team victories in a team sport like cricket.

“If you don’t win trophies, I don’t think those 5-6 hundreds make too much sense. Team sport is all about winning trophies, not about individual accomplishments,” Rohit Sharma concluded.

As Rohit Sharma prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be held in the West Indies and USA from June 01, he remains focused on leading India to success in ICC events and ending the team’s trophy drought.
