Rohit Sharma Joins Elite Club: Scores 4000 Runs in Men’s T20Is

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma achieved a significant milestone during the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Rohit became the third batter in men’s T20 internationals to score 4000 runs, joining the elite company of Virat Kohli and Babar Azam. He reached this landmark while helping India chase down a target of 97 set by Ireland.

Rohit needed 26 runs to reach the 4000-run milestone and achieved it with a stylish display of batting, particularly attacking Joshua Little in the second over of the chase. Despite an early scare when Andrew Balbirnie dropped him at 6, Rohit capitalized on the opportunity, demonstrating his class and experience.

The 37-year-old veteran now shares the record for the most hundreds in men’s T20 internationals (5) with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell. Rohit’s achievement is a testament to his enduring quality and skill in the shortest format of the game.

Rohit has been striving to regain his form ahead of the World Cup. Despite a relatively lean phase during the second half of the IPL 2024, where he managed a century against Chennai Super Kings but couldn’t maintain consistency, he has shown glimpses of his prowess. In India’s warm-up match against Bangladesh on June 1, he scored 23 runs off 19 balls, including two fours and a six, before being dismissed by Mahmudullah Riyad.

Interestingly, Rohit’s previous T20I innings saw him score an unbeaten 121 off 103 balls against Afghanistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in January.

Apart from this T20 milestone, Rohit Sharma is also closing in on another remarkable achievement—19000 runs in international cricket. Only 14 batters, including legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, Ricky Ponting, and Virat Kohli, have crossed this mark.

With Rohit’s leadership and his return to form, India’s prospects in the T20 World Cup look promising. The team is determined to end their ICC trophy drought, having last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.
