Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal to Open for India in T20I Against Afghanistan, Confirms Rahul Dravid; Possibility for Kohli-Rohit Open

In a pre-match press conference on Wednesday, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid provided clarity on the opening pair for the first T20 International against Afghanistan in Mohali. Dravid announced that Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal would form the opening combination, highlighting the significance of a left-right partnership at the top of the order.

Rohit Sharma, making a comeback to T20Is after a hiatus of nearly 14 months, will lead the side in the absence of regular captain Virat Kohli, who is unavailable for the opening T20I due to personal reasons. Dravid expressed his satisfaction with Jaiswal’s performance as an opener, stating, “We are certainly happy with what Jaiswal has done for us as an opener. It also gives us the left-right combination at the top.”

Flexibility in Squad

Addressing the media on the eve of the match, Dravid acknowledged the flexibility in the squad, allowing for strategic decisions based on the team’s best interests. He emphasized that the selection process considers a player’s capability to navigate various circumstances and is not solely driven by the desire for a left-right batting combination.

With Kohli absent for the opening T20I, Shubman Gill is set to take over the number three role in the top order. However, Dravid did not rule out the possibility of Kohli and Rohit Sharma opening together in the future. “Nothing is closed,” he stated, highlighting the exceptional ability and skill sets possessed by both players.

Selection Criteria and Performance

Dravid clarified that selection decisions are primarily based on performance and a player’s ability to handle different kinds of bowling. While the team welcomes left-handers like Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Tilak Varma, Dravid emphasized that the selection process evaluates a player’s overall performance rather than focusing solely on the left-right batting combination.

As India gears up to face Afghanistan in the T20I series, the opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal sets the tone for the team’s batting strategy. The match will provide insights into the team’s dynamics and potential partnerships as they build towards future challenges in T20 cricket.
