Riyan Parag: “Watch the Ball, Hit the Ball” – Youngster Credits Simpler Mindset for Form Reversal

After enduring several seasons of inconsistency, Riyan Parag is finally living up to his immense potential in IPL 2024. The Rajasthan Royals batsman has emerged as a key player for his team, currently leading the run-scorers’ chart with a string of impressive performances.

Following his match-winning knock against Mumbai Indians, which saw him snatch the orange cap from Virat Kohli, Parag shed light on the changes that have fueled his remarkable turnaround.

“Watch the Ball, Hit the Ball” –  A New Mantra for Success

In a refreshing display of self-awareness, Parag attributes his newfound success to a simplified approach. “Nothing has changed, just that I have simplified things,” he stated in the post-match interview.  He elaborated on his previous tendency to overthink, highlighting his current strategy of focusing solely on the ball and execution.

This shift in mindset appears to be paying dividends for the young batsman. After a dismal season in 2023, where he managed only 78 runs in seven matches, Parag has exploded in IPL 2024.  He has already amassed 181 runs in just three innings, surpassing his best season’s tally of 183 runs in 17 matches back in IPL 2022.

Finding Comfort in Familiarity: The Impact of Batting Order

Parag also highlighted the significance of his batting position on his current form.  “It’s a funny thing,” he remarked, “This is the exact situation I go in to bat in domestic cricket.” Filling the number four slot in domestic tournaments has evidently instilled confidence in Parag, allowing him to seamlessly transition into his role with the Rajasthan Royals.

This season, the Royals have promoted him up the order, and have been sending him at Number 4, a spot where Parag prefers playing and has flourished in the domestic circuit.

Back to the Drawing Board: Perseverance Pays Off

Parag acknowledged the challenges he faced in previous IPL seasons. “For 3-4 years, I haven’t performed well,” he admitted.  However, instead of succumbing to discouragement, he revealed his unwavering commitment to improvement. “When the performances are not coming, you get back to the drawing board,” he said.  This dedication to practice and visualization of key scenarios has undoubtedly played a crucial role in his resurgence.

Parag’s current form is a welcome sight not just for the Rajasthan Royals but also for Indian cricket fans.  His talent has been evident for several years, and this IPL season marks the blossoming of his potential.  With a clear understanding of his approach and a commitment to his craft, Parag is poised to continue his successful run and contribute significantly to the Royals’ quest for glory.
