Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, March 31, at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

Pant’s fine comes after his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences. The slow over rate violation occurred during the match against CSK, which DC won by 20 runs, ending their two-match losing streak in the tournament.

IPL Press Release talks about Pant’s offence

The IPL press release stated, “Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Chennai Super Kings at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on March 31.”

The release further explained, “As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pant was fined Rs 12 lakhs.”

Pant became the second captain in the IPL 2024 season to be penalized for a slow over rate, with the first being Gujarat TitansShubman Gill. Gill was fined during a match against CSK at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Under the IPL’s Code of Conduct, if a captain commits a second offence of maintaining a slow over rate, they are fined Rs 24 lakh, and the other members of the team, including the Impact Sub, are fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever is lesser.

In the event of a third offence, the captain of the bowling team is fined INR 30 lakh and faces a one-match ban. The other players in the team are fined 50 percent of their match fees or Rs 12 lakh each, whichever is lesser.

Despite the slow over rate, Pant had a notable performance with the bat in the match against CSK, scoring 51 runs off 32 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes. His innings helped Delhi Capitals post a competitive total of 191 for 5 in 20 overs. Subsequently, the Delhi team successfully defended their total, restricting Chennai Super Kings to 171 for 6.

The next match for Delhi Capitals is against Mumbai Indians on April 2, 2024, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
