RCB’s head coach Sanjay Bangar recalls a Kohli special

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are gearing up for the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) season with the hope of finally clinching their maiden title. The team has been a consistent performer in the IPL, making it to the playoffs on several occasions, but they have never been able to go all the way. However, the team is determined to change that this year, and they will kick off their campaign against the formidable Mumbai Indians on Sunday, 2nd April

RCB has a strong batting line-up that boasts some of the best T20 players in the world. The team’s success will heavily rely on the performance of their talismanic batter and former skipper, Virat Kohli. Kohli is one of the most successful batsmen in the IPL, having scored over 6,000 runs in the tournament. RCB’s head coach, Sanjay Bangar, recently praised Kohli’s determination and passion for the game.

“He played with stitches in his hand”

Virat Kohli, the former skipper and talismanic batter of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), recently completed 15 years with the franchise. To celebrate this milestone, Star Sports, the official broadcasting partner of the Indian Premier League (IPL), organized a special broadcast where they brought together several ex-cricketers to share their special moments involving Kohli.

In a video released on YouTube by Star Sports, RCB’s head coach Sanjay Bangar can be heard recalling a memorable incident involving Kohli. Bangar talks about Kohli’s determination and passion for the game and how it has inspired his teammates over the years. He then goes on to recall an incident when Kohli walked out to bat with stitches in his hand.

Despite the injury, Kohli went on to score a century in the match, which left an indelible impression on Bangar’s mind. “I remember a match, probably that was against Kings XI Punjab, where he played with stitches in hand and got a 100 in a 15-over match. That is phenomenal,” said Bangar.

The match as it happened

In a rain-marred contest, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) posted a staggering total of 211/3 in just 15 overs against the Kings XI Punjab in the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The RCB openers, Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle set the tone for the innings by adding 147 runs for the first wicket in just 11 overs.

Despite playing the game with a broken finger, Kohli played a scintillating knock of 113 runs off just 50 balls, at a strike rate of 226. His innings included 12 boundaries and 8 towering sixes, which left the opposition bowlers helpless.

In response, Kings XI Punjab could only manage to score 120 runs, losing the match by a massive margin of 82 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. RCB’s total was too much for the Punjab side to chase down, and they lost wickets at regular intervals, failing to build any meaningful partnerships.
