During the 2023 ODI World Cup, Pakistan faced an early exit from the group stage under the leadership of Babar Azam. Following this disappointment, Babar relinquished his captaincy duties. Shaheen Afridi was appointed as the captain for the shorter format of the game after Babar’s resignation from leadership across all formats. However, just two months before the T20 World Cup, Shaheen was relieved of his captaincy role due to Pakistan’s poor performance, particularly their 1-4 series loss against New Zealand.

Following the announcement of Pakistan‘s T20 World Cup squad, speculation emerged regarding Shaheen Afridi’s potential role as vice-captain. It was rumored that he was offered the position but declined. The reason behind his refusal reportedly stemmed from Pakistan’s lack of a designated deputy to Babar Azam, the team captain, as per the squad announcement.

PCB’s Official Statement:

The news was taking the internet on storm. But on Sunday, the Pakistan Cricket Board released an official statement on that highlighting the fact. The statement said, “During Friday’s selection committee meeting, discussions on the vice-captaincy took place. However, it was unanimously decided not to appoint anyone. As such, no offer was made to any player.”

Later the statement stated, “The side is fully united, committed and keenly looking forward to the upcoming matches in the UK and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.”

Before stepping into the T20 World Cup, Pakistan is locking horns with England in a T20 series to prepare well. But the series started with a disappointment. The first T20I between these two teams was abandoned due to rain. However, in the second match, they faced a defeat by 23 runs. They will try hard to bounce back in the third match of the series.
