No Cricket In India In The Near Future – Sourav Ganguly

The COVID-19 forced the world to take a long break. Everything was either postponed or cancelled and public health was given the foremost priority. Cricket was no exception. Due to the pandemic, all tournaments were affected including the IPL. This means a huge loss to the Indian cricket board but the president knows the importance of the same.

Future of cricket uncertain

Some cricket tournaments were called off completely and some were postponed until further notice. A number of matches were played in empty stadiums including the first ODI between Australia and New Zealand, the fifth day of the Ranji Trophy final between Saurashtra and Bengal, some of the Pakistan Super League matches. But as the situation started changing drastically the last leg of the PSL 2020 had to be cancelled for the time being. Likewise, the second and third ODI between India and South Africa were decided to be played without the crowd which eventually were cancelled.

The start of the IPL was deferred to April 15 initially. Then it was postponed for an indefinite time. In the current situation, nobody knows when the IPL can be organized and how. There is uncertainty over the future of the men’s T20 World Cup 2020 scheduled to be held in October-November Down Under. If that gets cancelled, the 13th edition of the IPL will get another window to be staged somehow. But everything is dicey now. Everything is at stake for the sake of public health.

Ganguly rejects chance of cricket

Acknowledging the fact Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president told Times of India on Tuesday that human life is a lot more important than sports. Meanwhile reportedly Bundesliga, the German football league, is likely to be the first top-flight league aiming to resume the league sometime in May. While asked about the same, Ganguly said, “The social reality of Germany and India are different, there will be no cricket in India in the near future.” He further added, “There are too many ifs and buts involved. More importantly, I don’t believe in sport when there is a risk to human life.”
