In the ICC’s Asia region qualifiers for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, Nepal showcased their cricketing prowess with a clinical victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Led by outstanding performances from their spinners, Nepal overcame UAE in a tricky chase, winning the semi-final by eight wickets.
Oman’s Ten-Wicket Triumph
Oman, on the other hand, delivered an exceptional performance as they routed Bahrain with a commanding ten-wicket victory in the semi-final. Aqib Ilyas was the standout performer, claiming a remarkable four-wicket haul and limiting Bahrain to a modest total of 106 for 9.
Nepal’s success in the semi-final was attributed to their spinners, Kushal Malla and Sandeep Lamichhane, who delivered frugal spells to keep UAE’s batsmen in check. While UAE’s Vriitya Aravind managed a half-century, he received little support from his teammates. The duo of Malla and Lamichhane combined to pick up five wickets, with captain Rohit Paudel contributing with a wicket in his solitary over.
Oman’s Openers Seal the Deal
Oman’s road to victory in the semi-final was paved by an exceptional bowling display led by Aqib Ilyas. His fantastic spell of 4 for 10 left Bahrain reeling, with the middle and lower order struggling to make an impact. Bahrain’s batting effort lacked significant partnerships, ultimately leading to their below-par total.
Oman’s openers, Kashyap Prajapati and Pratik Athavale, displayed composure and skill as they comfortably chased down Bahrain’s target. The duo’s unbeaten fifties ensured a smooth victory, with Prajapati reaching his half-century off 39 balls and Athavale achieving his milestone with consecutive boundaries in the 15th over, sealing Oman’s berth at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
With Nepal and Oman now securing their places in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, the anticipation for the tournament in the West Indies and the USA continues to grow. Eighteen teams have already finalized their spots, with just two more to be decided at the upcoming Africa qualifier. The stage is set for an exciting and competitive World Cup in the near future.
