Mohammed Shami Urges Support for Indian Tourism Amid Maldives Controversy

Indian cricket team’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami has shared his perspective on the current Maldives situation, voicing support for Indian tourism and encouraging fellow citizens to explore the beauty of Indian beaches.

In the midst of a controversy sparked by derogatory and ‘anti-India’ comments made by Maldives ministers and public figures following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the union territory of Lakshadweep, Shami emphasized the importance of promoting Indian tourism. “We should promote our tourism. No matter which way the country moves forward, it is good for everyone. PM is trying to make our country move forward so we should also support it,” Shami told ANI.

Shami’s remarks come as several athletes have condemned the ‘racist’ remarks made by public figures in the Maldives against India. They collectively urged fellow citizens to appreciate and explore the splendor of Indian beaches.

Looking ahead to cricket, after India’s historic win in South Africa in Cape Town, the team is gearing up to face England in a five-match Test series starting on January 25, with the first Test scheduled in Hyderabad. Expressing confidence in the team’s performance, Shami stated, “I am not thinking of anything new for this tour. I always thought that if I am fit then my performance will be amazing in the match. I try my best to fulfill the responsibilities given to me. The plus point is that these are our home conditions, and this helps you.”

While the England Men’s selection panel has named a 16-player squad for the series, India is yet to finalize its team.
